Hello, everyone
We’re back online again. It’s been a very long while since our last update. The past 7 months have been hectic, amazing, busy, crazy, wonderful, stressful, rewarding, and a big time of growth and service. Abi ran the School of Worship, Joel has been running the base worship team, and both of us were in the Philippines for an extended period during the USA summer months. Here’s what you’ll find in this update:
- A summary of our adventures on the School of Worship
- Stories from the Philippines
- What’s happening now
- Prayer Points
- Photos and videos in the photos and videos sections of the website!
School of Worship Summary
As you all know already, Abi led the School of Worship (SOW) for 6 months, April-September. Last year Abi co-led the school with our friend Erika, but this year Abi and Erika felt she should lead it alone as Erika continued to lead the ministry of Worship for the Nations, also known as WFN (Abi, Erika, and Joel’s sister, Faith, lead WFN together).
So, Abi led the school with one amazing staff person, Nathalie (see her picture from the previous update below). We had twelve students, and only us two staff; it was a handful, but God knew it was the right amount for us to handle!
I (Abi) learned so much about hearing God consistently and quickly outside of my personal times with Him and making decisions based on what He was saying in the moment. There were many times circumstances that would suddenly change, and I wouldn’t be sure what to do. So I’d just ask God quickly in my mind, and BOOM! God would answer. He’s so smart, He always knew what to say! A HUGE thing I got better understanding on was SERVANT LEADERSHIP, and truly how selfless and humble Jesus is as a leader. I could type forever about this, but here is what He taught me, summarised:
“We don’t lead to be respected or recognised… we lead to serve.”
It’s obvious, and I already knew it, but I was so blessed that God challenged me in it, let me experience it, and see His character more and more through different situations. He’s a good God and He knows how to refine us and make us look more like Him!
Philippians 2:3-8 says,
3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
6 Though he was God,
he did not think of equality with God
as something to cling to.
7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;
he took the humble position of a slave
and was born as a human being.
When he appeared in human form,
8 he humbled himself in obedience to God
and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Don’t you love Jesus?! Isn’t He amazing?!
We had a very fruitful outreach, seeing many miracles and a lot of people commit their lives to the Lord. It was a good school, and many students are returning to join staff with us at YWAM Perth! It will be exciting to see them continue to grow in the place of worship, love for Jesus, and the nations!
Stories from the Philippines
We did the math, and since 2016 Abi has spent 5 months in Manila and Joel has spent nearly the same amount of time there. We are so blessed that we were able to invest so much in this beautiful city! It’s all thanks to GOD and to YOU ALL for praying for us, sending us there financially, and encouraging us! THANK YOU! Here are a few quick stories from our time there this year working with Megacities Manila:
The mute can speak!
Some of the SOW students were out telling people about Jesus and praying for people with some of the locals. They asked God where to go and who to look for, and they felt like they needed to find an old man sitting on a bench. After some walking, there he was! They tried asking him questions, and quickly realised he couldn’t speak. Through pantomime and asking yes or no questions, they discovered the man had been in an accident in his earlier years and hadn’t been able to speak since. They shared with him about Jesus, and his eyes beamed with joy. They asked if he wanted to follow Jesus, and he nodded yes! After praying (not out loud obviously) he was full of joy. They then asked if they could pray for him to speak again. They prayed a few times, and finally one of the SOW students, Eva from the Netherlands, felt to ask him to try speaking as an act of faith. The man’s first words in decades were, “I don’t know if I can speak!” Of course he was shocked and amazed that he actually spoke! It was an amazing story of God’s great love for the individual and taking care of his needs!
Saved from suicidal thoughts!
I (Abi) was out talking to people and praying for people, and I found a young man running his father’s small shop. What I thought would be a 10-15 minute conversation turned into 2 hours! I shared with Him about Jesus, and it was amazing how clearly I heard the Holy Spirit leading the conversation. At one point, the teen misunderstood my question, but his answer led to the most important part of the conversation: he had been struggling with thoughts of death and suicide. He had been asking God to kill him, because he didn’t see purpose in his life. I was able to share with him how our purpose is in Jesus Christ, and many other things God told me to say. He excitedly gave his life to Jesus, and I was able to give him a Bible in his own language. After reading a passage, he said, “This book is so beautiful.” I encouraged him to tell others about his relationship with Jesus, and to read from the Gospel of John and remember Matthew 28:19-20. It was so cool! His countenance transformed before my eyes! He was full of hope and joy!
Locals worshiping in the streets!
As the School of Worship, we were able to run a worship seminar with a few churches in the area. It was really exciting! Joel, Abi, and the SOW students taught, and we were able to take people outside to sing and share about Jesus in their neighbourhoods. We had many young people with us, saying, “We’ve never gone out like this before, but we must continue after you leave! We will continue what you have taught us!” Locals saw Jesus heal people and touch broken hearts. This is what Megacities is all about, helping the local church step into their neighbourhoods and families, sharing about the love and healing Jesus has for every individual. God is good!
What’s Happening Now
Joel has been hard at work on a building project for our YWAM base. It will be an accommodation building to hold new students and guests who come and speak on our schools. It’s called 142 Summers Street (that’s the address but that’s what we call it haha). We’ve seen financial miracles to see this building come up, and Joel has been a crucial member in its development. In case y’all didn’t know, Joel is skilled in carpentry and construction! Joel is still full-time leading the YWAM Perth worship team as well, but he has taken up this extra responsibility to serve what God’s spoken to our base–to have 500 staff and 500 students at any given 3 months of the year! This building will hold some of those people.
Abi is back to leading Worship for the Nations with Erika and Faith. The ministry is growing, and it seems by next year there will be over 20 of us in the ministry. It’s amazing that we started as a small group of 5 in 2015!
We are still praying about some details for the future, but we will be in Perth for Christmas this year. We know God has a lot in store for 2018!
